What we give is a second chance. The first chance a person has is at birth. But these children were born into an unfavorable situation.
We offer another chance at life.
In this second chance, we make physical and emotional space for children to encounter love and God, and to be transformed by such.
These children had a difficult childhood. We offer an alternative childhood wherein they are loved, respected, protected, and restored.
The Round Home is a place of refuge for children rescued from abuse and exploitation. With a biopsychosocial approach to survivor care, we work toward the children's healing, growth and development, release of potentials, empowerment, and coming full circle, liberated from their trauma, as a valued and productive member of society. For tools we employ the appropriate conventional methods that work for children in general and for this type of children in particular, as well as arts, music, and the different elements of the environment.
The Round Home is round with no sharp edges, literally and figuratively, which promotes an equal sense of belonging and community, and where no child feels left out or isolated in a far corner of the building.
The Round Home programs and services emanate from the biopsychosocial perspective.
Theory of Change
Our theory of change is based on the architecture of the brain.
Traumatic childhood experiences, such as, abuse, violence, chronic poverty and hunger, instability, family dysfunction, and neglect result in toxic stress, wherein the dominant reactions to life are the automatic brain functions of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. These automatic functions are important for survival, at appropriate times, but in order to navigate the different challenges of life effectively, they have to be counterbalanced with the brain’s executive skills of self-control, awareness, focus, goal-setting, and flexibility.
